Spirulina is the best-known of the world’s algae. These organisms are usually referred to by their colour, and Spirulina is a member of the blue-green group. It is the easiest of all algae for humans to digest. Unlike other plants or algae spirulina has no stem, root or leaves. The nutrition supplied by spirulina includes a range of vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, carbohydrates and amino acids. It contains almost 26 times the calcuim available in cow’s milk, plus iron, B12 and phosphorous. Easy to digest and almost without side-effects, spirulina is regarded as an enhancer of the immune system, allowing the body to optimise itself and achieve detoxification. The algae is known to help the human body fight blood sugar disorders, gastrointestinal issues, anaemia, cataracts and glaucoma.

 

The stabilising effect of Spirulina can allow increased production of the anti-inflammatory chemicals known as interleukins and interferons. It is also believed to prompt reductions in allergic responsivity. Its high protein content assists recovery from injury and muscle exercise.
